Seth Bagan Mahila Sangha
Seth Bagan Mahila Sangha (SBMS) is a non-profit organisation that has been working with marginalized people since May 1986. It was started in the year of 1986 as the first sex worker’s collective in India to prevent violence among CSWs in brothels. It was a pioneer in organizing the women in Ram Bagan and Seth Bagan areas in Central Kolkata to stand for their own rights as well as protest against the torture and violence among these commercial sex workers. SBMS enabled these women by providing education and life skill-building training. It is putting effort into minimizing trafficking and rehabilitating the women existing in commercial sex work who want to leave this job. Moreover, the children of the sex workers were also the prime concern of the organisation. The organisation is taking the initiative towards the holistic development of the children of the sex workers.
The history of the organisation could be traced back to ladies who were from the community but once thought to leave the sex trade. They initiated to unite the other women in this trade to stand against those who force women to be trafficked in this work. They themselves made a contract with the local police and judiciary to leave all women under them and made a force to prevent the flow of new girls in this job. This idea gave birth to a body that can stand for the women and female sex workers at the same point against the violation of their rights.
